  • Everyone gets drunk but Mr. Gatsby because he enjoys watching everyone quitely by himself.

  • Myrtle talks about Daisy and Tom told he no to talk about Daisy. Myrtle then aggitated Tom and then Tom broke her nose.
  • Mr. McKee and Nick leave drunk and take the late bus back to Long Island.

Reaponce

-I think it was very harsh for Tom to break Myrtle's nose because he didn't want her to talk about his wife. The book is getting a little easier to read at this point and hopefully will continue to.

Henry would have received more aid from the military if he wouldn’t have every run away.
• Henry ran away at the beginning of the book. He ran away because he became very cowardly and decided that the best thing for him to do would be run away. In chapter 6, Henry and a bunch of other men decide to run from the ongoing battle. “He ran like a blind man. Two or three times he fell down. Once he knocked his shoulder so heavily against a tree that he went headlong." (Crane 6.27) Henry left in such a hurry there was no way that he would be able to take anything to support himself. Henry now has no food, water, or any type of protection. He would have all this given to him if he would be at camp after the fight. He has to figure out how to survive on whatever he can until he goes back to face the rest of the regimen. Also, Henry ran away because he was afraid to die in battle but he also has a chance of dying due to starvation or dehydration. Henry had a chance of dying either way. He would have either been killed in battle with a bullet, a quick death, or he would starve, a slow painful death.

• When Henry ran away someone found out about it. Henry had to deal with everyone confronting him about where he was and why he wasn’t fighting. He had to make up lies, and in my opinion I think that his leaders and fellow soldiers could tell it was all an excuse. “The owner of the cheery voice took him firmly by the arm. "Well," he said, with a round laugh, "I'm goin' your way. "Th' hull gang is goin' your way. An' I guess I kin give yeh a lift." They began to walk like a drunken man and his friend." (Crane 11.37) This is an example of when Henry lies. He claims to be lost, even though he knows exactly where camp is. The leader of another group is offering to help Henry get back to camp because Henry said he needed help. Henry would have gained more emotional support from the group if he hadn’t run. Henry felt like he belonged to the group when he actually fought for the first time. Everyone would have appreciated the help he gave them when he actually fought, if he would have helped them with previous battles.

• Henry was never a fighter. He was in the army but he backed down. Toward the end of the book, Henry becomes this great and awesome soldier who fought better than a lot of other men. Everyone showed him more respect after he was more courageous. “He called out to the youth: "By heavens, if I had ten thousand wild cats like you I could tear th' stomach outa this war in less'n a week!" He puffed out his chest with large dignity as he said it." (Crane 17.20) In this part his commander is telling him that Henry is one of the best soldiers he has ever had. The commander is basically saying that if everyone fought like Henry they would be able to win a war in a week. If Henry would have always been the type of fighter he was at the end of the book he may have been able to become someone of higher power. His foolishness at the beginning of the book determined the outcome of the rest of Henry’s time there. He could have been a hero.

Themes, Motifs, and Symbols

These are the key concepts you need to pay attention to while reading The Red Badge of Courage. I will expect to see references to these concepts, along with examples, in your response blogs.

Themes: an idea that recurs in or pervades a work
Courage- Henry didn't have very much courage at the beginning of the book. He ran away form the battles all the time and never actually fought. At the end of the book Henry was one of the most courageous men out on the battle field.

Manhood-Henry wasn't ever called a man at the beginning of the book. Later in the book they don't refer to him at the youth anymore.

Self-preservation- Henry was scared at the beginning to fight bcause he was afraid of dying. He was just being very cautious out his life and preserved it.

Disregard for Human Life- When your in battle you can't be afraid to kill someone else. You just have to keep in your mind that they aren't someone you want to keep alive, your fighting for your oun life.

Motifs: distinctive feature or dominant idea
Noise and Silence- in the story i think that noise represents the actual battle and silence represents peace.
Light and Dark- Light is like the living soldiers and dark is like the dead soldiers.
Clean and Dirty-
Youth and Maturity- Youth are the soldiers who are scared to fight and run away from battle and Maturity is the soldiers who are brave enough to go out and fight for their country.

Symbols: objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas
The Dead Soldier- It is like a symbol to show you how you could end up if your not careful. You need to keep in mind what you do have while you are living.

The Flag- When you think about the flag you think of it flying over your country. That is true because it shows that you are proud of your country and you will fight to protect it. But you have to look at it 2 ways the other countries out there see it too. To the other country's it is a target or alliance. During battle when you win and take their flag it represents your victory over them and its proof that you won that battle.

Characters for your list:
Henry Fleming - main character. finally proves himself couragous at the end of the book.
Jim Conklin- the tall soldier, he fights to death in front of Henry
Wilson- He is the loud soldier and thinks he knows everything at the beginning of the book when he really doesn't. At the end of the book he does actually know.
tattered soldier- dead soldier showing what could happen to him.
Lieutenant- leads the group to victory
Henry's Mother- is henrys inspiration to stay alive. he is fighting for his life for her.

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 24

In this chapter Henry's group is told that they are supposed to go back and join with all the other groups. While they are marching Henry has alot of time to think. His mind soon takes him back home where everything is so peaceful and calm. He looks up to the light blue sky and as it starts to rain he sees that everything is just amazing.
  • Henry is soon at ease because he knows that he will soon be home where everything is how its always been.
  • What will his mom do when Henry finally gets back home?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 23

In this chapter Henry's regimen is told that they either have to fight or get killed where they are. At first no one moved but then all of the sudden they all got up and started to charge at the enemy. Henry's group did very well and they were able to kill alot of men. Eventually they pushed them back past their fence and over took them.
  • This chapter was fairly good. I think it kept my attention very well but i don't know of it is in the book for a specific reason that ill find out later or just another example of a battle Henry and Wilson do very well with.
  • What type of place were they in?

Quiz 2

Henry is referred to as "the youth" and Wilson is referred to as "the loud private." How has each character changed from the beginning of the story to now, specifically in regards to these monikers? Use specific examples from the story to support your answer.
  • Henry was not experienced when he first got to the military. He was just a cowardly boy who always ran when it came the time to fight. In chapter 17 and 18 Henry decieded that it was gonna be all or nothing and faught. He didn't even care if he died or not.
  • Wilson was just a loud soldier who thought he knew everything. He always told people what to do at the beginning of the book. He never had any room to talk until he started to fight. Just like Henry he later proved himself able to talk like that because he actually knew what he was doing.

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 22

This chapter is all one battle. Basically they are fighting and nothing is happening until the rebels start to pull ahead because they are hiding like little cowards behind a trench. All Henry could see was his friends dead on the battle field. Henry and Wilson had decieded to fight until they die.
  • I think this chapter is boring and doesn't even need to be in the book.
  • Why did henry decied to say he would die for his country after he ran so many times?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 21

During this chapter they are fighting and in the middle of their battle Henry's redimen decieds that if they don't retreat they will lose. They fall back and later when thay are at camp this other guy comes and say that if they would have gone a little farther they woul have won. Then he said something about their group gets to carry the American flag and that Wilson lead the whole last battle. He also said that he thinks Henry and Wilson will be major generals soon.
  • I'm glad that Henry has finally gone a fought a few times. He is over being a coward and that is really good for him. He may also get to be a general so he will have something as proof that he wasn't always a coward.
  • What was the deal with the American Flag?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 20

Henry and Wilson start out in this chapter decieding who is gonna take the flag. Although Henry wins the fight they still stick together. Their whole group is stand there with the enemy approaching them and Henry moves to the middle and holds the flag with pride. Everyone thinks they are gonna die but Henry has faith. After the enemy is gone they see that they lived. It was all because Wilson fired the first shot causing them to all shot and that made the enemy retreat.
  • The book is alot more intresting than it was at the beginning because it is full of action that keeps you reading.
  • When is the pace gonna change? Are they gonna fight for the rest of the whole book?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 19

In this Chapter Henry's regimen is fighting. They begin to run but then Wilson fires a shot. Henry then realizes that if they stay they will all die. Henry and Wilson then leave together and see a American flag on the ground. They pick it up while they are running and then they just dissappear. This part was really confusing and i don't understand where they went.
  • I liked how exciting this chapter was but I couldn't understand the end and it really bothers me. Wilson and Henry are like fighting buddies now and they do everything together.
  • Where did they go at the end of the chapter?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 18

I am confused about the beginning of this chapter. Henry is getting water for some of the other men, i think. When he was on his way back he heard other men talking about a battle that had started. Henry and Wilson were gonna go help another group and Henry's group was gonna just be there for back up. Everyone said that Henry's group is worthless and they should only be back up because otherwise they will all die.
  • I thought that they just said Henry's group did good in the last battle because they made the enemy retreat. I don't understand why thay are saying they are bad?
  • What was they water part all about?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 17

Henry's regimen starts to fight again in this chapter. Henry did not back down and he fought better than alot of other men. He was chasing the enemy know realizing that no one else was. His commander was very proud of Henry as was the rest of the group. They told him that if there was more fighters like him he would have a really strong regimen.
  • I think that it's about time Henry does what he says hes gonna. I wonder if he regrets running all those times because ow he will have to tell people he ran and be ashamed of it or hid it and lie to people for the rest of his life.
  • Why does Henry suddenly change?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 16

This chapter is based in a ditch. Henry's regimen is getting ready to fight and before this everyone is talking about their losses. Henry starts to think he know everything and says its all the leaders fault. Finally someone brought up the fact that Henry ran and he has no room to talk about people being weak. Now Henry doesn't think that he is that much better than everyone else.
  • I think that it was a good thing for Henry to get embarrassed because is taught him a lesson to stay in his place. He is still thinking he knows whats going on in all that battles but he is realizing he's gonna have to fight to prove he know what he's talking about.
  • How did that soldier know Henry ran? Did Henry tell them?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 15

Henry becomes very arrogant in this chapter. He is thinking about the previous battle and how some men had ran. He starts thinking that they are all pathetic. While Henry is thinking about the weak men he starts to think how invincible he is. He thinks he has nothing to worry about in the next battle because he knows he won't die. In this chapter Wilson also asks for Henry's letter, the letter that would be sent home if he died.
  • Henry is indecisive. He wants to fight but when the battle actually comes he runs because he is scared that he will die. Now he says he can't die so he has no reason to worry abot going out and fighting. This makes no sense at all.
  • Will Henry run from the next battle?

Sunday, November 23, 2008

The Red Badge of Couage- Ch 14

Not alot of different things happened this chapter. Henry woke up and heard a battle had started. Wilson came and helped henry with his wound and they ate some breakfast. While they were eating alot of "lost" soldiers came back to camp.

  • Im confused why they can hear a battle but they aren't fighting. why do thay act like there isn't even a battle going on?
  • Were all the lost soldiers ones who ran away like henry?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 13

While Henry was walking Wilson came up to Henry. Wilson was asking Henry who he was. After Henry said who he was Wilson seemed surprised. Everyone thought Henry was dead, but Henry explained to them that he was lost and couldn't find the rest of the group. He also told them that he was hit in the head by a bullet.
  • Henry is gonna get caught lying somehow. He should have just told them he wanted to go home because he was not able to fight for some reason. All of his problems would have been solved then.
  • Did they tell Henry's mom he was dead?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 12

In this chapter Henry happens to get into a mix up of soldiers. They all come running while Henry is ust walking down the road. He tries to find out why they are acting like that but no one will talk to him. Henry then tries to get one guys attention but he says to let him go and he hits Henry which knocks him out. He is taken back to camp by some guy and doesn't know who is was.
  • I don't know why the story changed so much between chapters. It doesn't seem to fit into the story yet.
  • Why wouldn't anyone tell Henry what was going on?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 11

This chapter Henry thinks he is finally going to go and fight, but then Henry realizes that he doesn't have his gun. He makes up excuses and ends up not fighting. He doesn't want everyone to think bad about him because he doesn't fight.
  • Henry doesn't want everyone to think bad but how can they not when all he does is back down. He is also running out of excuses for not fighting and he better get ready to fight because when he doesn't have any left he is just gonna have to go out and fight.
  • Why doesn't Henry have a gun?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 10

Henry and the tattered soldier talk alot in Chapter 10. Henry is very uneasy the entire time because that tattered soldier is gonna die because he faught. The tattered man doesn't want to die because he has a family to go back to. This bothers Henry because he really doesnt have anything to go back to except his mother. Later the soldier dies but Henry had run away.
  • I hate what Henry is doing. He thinks that running away from his fears will help him but it doesn't at all.
  • What time of year is it?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 8

Henry is in the woods trying to get a better look at the battle that he ran from. He is watching the fight as he is walking among alot of dead bodies. Later he sees a bunch of soldiers walking in a group talking about the battle. He deceids to join them and comes to hear they are all talking about how proud they are that they won. Henry could also see that they were all wounded, and even then they were happy about what had happened.
  • I think Henry should just go against his fears and fight in the next battle because he always feels bad about running and if he fought he wouldn't feel that way.
  • What is Henry living off of? Food, shelter, Etc.

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 9

In this chapter the Henry is walking and see a group of wounded soldiers. He deciedes to join the group, but when the tattered soldier asks Henry how he is injured he runs. Henry felt really bad about running away. He thought he would die so when he found out they won the battle he felt bad for not being there to help.

  • I think that Henry should just decied right now what he wants to do. He should know if he wants to fight for his country or run away. He can't keep going back and forth because that isn't right. If he wants to get the Red Badge he's gonna have to just fight and not keep running away.
  • Why did Henry think he could join the group of wounded soldier when he clearly had no injury?

Quiz 1

Post your answer to the following question in the most current location on your blog. Be complete. You may use your notes (obviously).

1. What does the title of this book mean? Be specific in your response, noting Henry's comments.
-The Red Badge is one of the highest awards you can receive as a soldier. You receive this badge when you show great courage, not only in front of the commanders but also when you think that no one is watching.

2. What is the importance of the tattered man? What does he represent?
-The tattered man is a symbol. When Henry see the man he feels bad because he wasn't there fighting too.
3. What role does Henry's mother play while he is away from her?
-She is like the little voice in Henry's head. He subconsciously thinks about the words that his mother said while he was getting ready to leave. He later thinks about the reason's why he should have stayed home with he instead of going to war. Especially now because he has deceided to run, he could have been at home the whole time and his mother was completely right about him going to war.

4. How does Henry use the squirrel to justify his actions?
-Henry throws a pine cone at the squirrel and whatever the squirrel did that's how Henry was gonna chose what he would do. Since the squirrel ran away that represents Henry running away.

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch. 7

Throught this chapter Henry is alone in the woods and has alot of time to think. He is wondering what he should do. He later finds a dead soldier and it is being eaten away by ants. This freaks him out a little bit. He was afraid that the soldier would start talkin to him and he was very scared. He now has even more on his mind to think about.
  • I am wondering what Henry is thinkin will happen in the long run because he is kinda digging himself into a hole. He really has no where to go and he has no idea what he's gonna do.
  • What do you think hes gonna do?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch. 6

This chapter is basically all about Henry running. They begin a battle right after the other and some of the soldiers didn't think that would happen. Henry and a bunch of other soldiers decieded they didn't want to fight so they all ran. I think I read something about a few of the ones that ran were forced, but I'm not sure. Henry got caught and he still hasn't been punished.
  • I always thought that if you tried to run away you would get in huge trouble for dis honoring you country. He did just that and he was seen by his commander.
  • Why isn't Henry being punished?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch. 5

In this chapter they are immediatly going into another battle. They are told by their commander to hold them back. After a while the ememy finally pulled back. The field that they were in was slowly calming down leaving only small, black pieces of debris on the empty area. The smoke from their guns sailed away in the wind and the sky was peaceful.
  • I don't think the book is going anywhere. It seems like we are just at a stand still and the author didn't know what to write about for a while. I think because of all the battles if I had the choice to stop reading this book I would.
  • Why did they tell us about the soldier that climbed the fence and took a shot part? Was this of importance?

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

The Red Badge of Courage Ch. 4

Throughout this chapter there is a battle going on. All of the men are running around and many people are being shot at. After this has been going on for a while Henry's commanders hand is shot. I didn't know what happened at the end because it talks about one man not being able to control his legs.
  • I think even though this was a short chapter, it was very hard for me to follow what was all happening. This is the first time the book talks about an actual battle being fought and it isn't able to be understood.
  • What all happened at the end of Chapter 4?

The Red Badge of Courage Ch. 3

Through out this whole chapter the men are just marching around. They all saw many things while they were out there, like a dead soldier dressed in a yellowish brown uniform. Also, they were all stumbling over the branches and other earthly things on the ground. When they got back they were all talking about how they shouldn't march and it would be better if they just stayed at camp and didn't tire themselves out.
  • I would say that this chapter is a intoroduction to the next few chapers. They probably just used as a informational chapter. Although this chapter did give us another sense of what goes on in the soldiers heads.
  • Who was the soldier they found dead?

The Red Badge of Courage Ch. 2

As the regimen became ready for battle, the older men became to speak of untold rumors. They claimed to see eyes across the river and horsemen run past. After the men began to quiet down the youth had time to think. Henry started to wonder why he wanted to go to the place hes at. He had thoughts about his life back on the farm and his daily routine there. One of the older men came to Henry while he was thinking. They had a talk about braveness, and how to know if they will run or not. Henry learned that no one is the bravest man in the world just being brave is enough. Henry then went into his tent and fell asleep.
  • I think that through Henry's talk with the older soldier we learn what our soldiers go through. They have to think about how their life could be gone with a single shot. I think that the whole chapter is based on braveness and courage.
  • Why does the older soldier come talk to Henry?

The Red Badge of Courage- Ch 1.

At the beginning of the chapter the soldiers are all sitting around telling stories. When Henry begins to speak, he tells the story about how he got into the military. His mother told him over and over that he was not allowed to enlist. Henry. determined to fight, went against his mothers orders and enlisted anyway. He later came home and told his mother what he did. Over and over, his mother repeated that he was a fool. However, in the end, she came to understand thats when Henry really wanted to do. When the story goes back to all the soldiers at camp, you hear about a huge battle that they are getting ready to start. Tomorrow was the big day and all the soldiers were anxious.
  •  I think, so far, the story has shown a lot about persistence. If Henry wouldn't have gone to his mother asking for her approval, she would have never understood how much he wanted to go. I think his constant begging mentally prepared her for when he came home to tell her that he went against he orders and enlisted anyway. It was much easier because she knew in the back of her mind she had to let him go.
  • Where is Henry's father? What happened to him?
